Endangered bird species: the meeting and consensus of all relevant actors

Who’s around in the winter in the wetlands and with what purpose?
So, what is poaching and why it still exists since it is condemned by everyone? Who is threatened by this, and what is the relationship with the hunt? What is the role of Νανόχηνας, the most endangered aquatic bird of Europe with all of this? To these questions it attempts to answer the documentary “Breezy Flights”.
Premiere at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will be the documentary “Breezy Flights” of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Hellenic Ornithological society for the paradoxical relationship between poaching, endangered bird species and the hunting, on the Weekend 12 and 13 March 2016.
The production of the documentary has been done in the framework of the campaign to tackle poaching, the important for the Νανόχηνα wetlands. Greece, which implements the european Program LIFE+ “Safeguarding the Φιννοσκανδικού population of Νανόχηνας in significant areas of wintering and parking along the European migration route”.
From the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean and from the Delta of the Ebro as far as the Lake of Kerkini, the documentary “Breezy flights” invites us to a journey of coexistence of birds and man in the wetlands of Northern Greece. In the winter thousands of aquatic birds are invading every inch of the wetlands in the North. And with them, the 30 remaining pairs Νανόχηνας, claim their own space with hunters, bird watchers and poachers.
With a background of the unique landscapes of the wetlands of Northern Greece, under the sounds of birds, wind and shots, we are looking for patrons of the wetlands in the winter, each of which tells its own story about the relationship with nature, the hunt, the protection of wildlife. By the ornithologists of the Arctic Circle, to the observers of birds in Lake Kerkini, the Forestry Officials and hunters in the Evros Delta, unfolds in various ways in the interest for the wild nature.
“The Ministry of Environment and Energy, by participating in this documentary, it shows sensitivity and concern for the protection of aquatic birds and the restriction of poaching. We know very well the peculiarities from region to region of the country, as well as the weaknesses of the system for monitoring and control of violations of forest and environmental law that occur in forest and wetland ecosystems. These difficulties impose the need for cooperation of the Forest Services with the Hunting and Environmental Organizations to limit these phenomena. The update of the inhabitants of the rural areas, the cooperation and the training of the operators involved in the storage of the wetlands is necessary and very important elements for the effectiveness of our joint effort,” says Nikos Μπόκαρης, Head of Department of Protection of Wild Fauna and Hunting of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
“Highlighting the wonderful pictures of the Greek wetlands and the “cohabitation” of birds and people in them, we continue the dialogue, and the long effort to reclaim the right of wild nature to life. The Νανόχηνα is sounding the alarm on behalf of not only wild birds but also of the same wetland. We can only respond to”, expresses the Magnolia Βουγιούκαλου, Coordinator of the LIFE+ Programme for the protection of the Νανόχηνας.
