Discrimination to students in the 10th International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics

Students competed in extremely demanding tests in which they took part 240 students from 41 countries from all over the world. These are the best students selected to represent their countries in the Olympics. The first “gold” a student is from India and resolved 89% of the subjects.
The Antonis Valmas from the Model School of Anavryta (now a student of Physics at the university of ATHENS) and George Παπαχατζάκης from the 2nd LYCEUM “Schools Μαντουλίδη” Thessaloniki (now a student the University of Manchester in the Uk) won bronze medals, while Giannis Vogiatzis from the secondary school of Koufalia-Thessaloniki (now a student of Physics, ARISTOTLE university of thessaloniki) received honorable mention. The mission participated in the John Kallimanis, from the 41st LYCEUM of Athens (now a student of Physics at the university of ATHENS) and Christos Foundation (student of the Greek College of Thessaloniki).
Head of the mission was the emeritus professor of the Department of Physics of the ARISTOTLE university of thessaloniki mr Yiannis Σειραδάκης and assistant professor, University of Thessaly, mr. Lucas Ζαχείλας. In the preparation of the Greek mission in the matter of the Olympiad participated the lady of Pleasure ^ from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, the vice president of the society of Astronomy of Volos and honorary school adviser of Natural Science mr. Christos Xenakis and the postgraduate/doctoral students John Nestor, Angel Tsiaras, George Λιούτας, Despina Παζούλη, as well as the students: John Κουταλιός, Pericles Οκαλίδης, Orpheus Βουτυράς, Manos Βουρλίωτης and Lily Maroudas.
The selection of students was made by the 21st Panhellenic Student competition of Astronomy and Space, carried out all over Greece from the Company Astronomy and Space, which has its headquarters in the city of Volos and the preparation of students was also in the city of Volos, like all the previous years.
“The discrimination of the Greek students is impressive, given the removal of the course of Astronomy from the secondary education in our country, a country in which, as is well known, was born the science that” supports the head of mission, mr Σειραδάκης.
The Onassis Foundation, recognizing the importance of the mission, took the transition costs and return as well as the local costs of preparation of the mission in the city of Volos.
The next Olympiad will be held in Thailand in November 2017.
