David Whit for Maria Sakkari: “She must become more aggressive and have fun”

Her new coach spoke on the WTA website about his collaboration with the Greek champion and the first goals he has set himself. David Whit explained what he thinks Maria Sakkari has done wrong to date, but stressed that he wants to expel her and stress to have fun at the time of the match. In the first tournament they cooperate, however, the top Greek tennis player is already in the quarterfinals Whit’s statements “It’s some little things we’re looking to do. Maybe some exercises to help her be more aggressive sometimes than passive. When you’re hesitant, I think you can make more mistakes. I mean, when you play so you don’t lose, but to win. At this level the top 10 players must play to win. If you give them the ball around the service line and they don’t come forward to attack, then they don’t do anything right. In the last two games she remained positive, she was there and they helped her win these games. I want to make her more relaxed and have fun. That sometimes works and some don’t. Being happy instead of being nervous, I think it allows you to play your best tennis. All good so far.” Sakkari will now face Indian Wells quarterfinals Friday (15/03/24, 03:00, Novasports 6), American Emma Navarro.
