Culturenow (http://www.culturenow.gr/), reported yesterday that most of the tickets available in the market for the Alexandrov Ensemble performing live in Greece during June (1-3), are sold. The Alexandrov Ensemble are perhaps better known as the “Red Army Choir”, are famous worldwide. They perform a wide range of songs from hymns to Russian folk songs and songs of the Soviet Union (political songs).

Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov was a heart and soul of the Ensemble and its first artistic director. He is also known as the man who wrote the National Anthem of the Soviet Union.  The scope of the Ensemble was to promote local folklore and Soviet Union’s  traditions via the help of amateur musicians that belonged to ranks of the Soviet Union. After 1950’s the Ensemble purpose was mainly to glorify Soviet Union politics and Communist leaders. In 1929, the Ensemble travelled the vast Soviet Union and performed in various army camps and cities, and in time the ensemble grew from 24 to 300 performers. During those years and especially during the World War 2, the Ensemble performed in more that 1.500 cities and army camps, helping to increase the moral of the Soviet soldiers that was on the verge of breakdown, due to the kolossal defeats that the Soviet Army suffered by the German Army in the first years of the war.

After his death in 1946, his son Boris became director of the Ensemble and helped tremendously in the turning the Ensemble into a universal spectacle, since Boris vision was to make the Ensemble know all around the world. Boris also turned the Ensemble into a highly disciplined and well coordinated body of musicians. The urban legend is that during a tour in Canada, Boris left his conductor position leaving the Ensemble performing autonomously for little less than an hour (!). If you come to think of it, it must be a tremendous achievement because the Ensemble must follow the same rhythm simultaneously by all musicians-even the slightest mistake by one person can easily cause a chaos in the orchestra.

The Ensemble or Red Army Choir will be performing in Greece live in 1,2 and 3rd of June. For more information please visit www.culturenow.gr
