Zetta Makri on Journalist Blackmail Case: I Did the Right Thing, Justice Will Decide

New Democracy MP Zetta Makri has described as ‘deeply distressing’ the blackmail case involving a well-known journalist from Volos. The journalist, who runs a local media outlet in the area, allegedly demanded €15,000 from Makri to stop publishing negative reports about her. After informing the authorities, Makri met the journalist at a café in Volos harbor on Saturday morning (5.7.25), where he was caught in possession of €5,000 in marked banknotes handed over by the MP.

‘It’s a matter that weighed heavily on me. I did what my conscience dictated, and now it’s up to the justice system,’ said Makri in an interview with ERT News. She further stated that while there had been negative reports published about her, she chose not to elaborate further, calling the situation extremely painful.

‘It wasn’t easy. I struggled internally for a long time, but I believe I did the right thing—not just for myself, but also for my family and my career path. It was very upsetting, but necessary,’ she added.

Following his arrest, the journalist is currently being held at the Volos Police Department for questioning.
