Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on European Union leaders in Brussels to support the proposal for a ceasefire in air and sea as part of efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine. Leaders from the 27 member states met in Brussels for an emergency summit after the US signaled that Europe must handle its own security. Zelenskyy stated he had discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding a meeting of military representatives from countries in a ‘coalition of the willing’ to assist in defending Ukraine. “Everyone must ensure that Russia, as the sole source of this war, accepts the need for it to end. This can be achieved with two forms of ceasefire that are easy to establish and monitor. Specifically, no attacks on energy and other urban infrastructures – ceasefire on missiles, bombs, and large unmanned aircraft, and secondly, a ceasefire at sea, meaning no military operations in the Black Sea,” said the Ukrainian president. Zelenskyy wrote on X that they discussed the upcoming March 11 meeting, adding that there is a ‘clear common vision’ that lasting peace is possible through cooperation with the US. Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have proposed a ‘coalition of the willing’ to defend Ukraine and guarantee peace post-ceasefire. Earlier today, Starmer’s office reported that officials from about 20 countries participated in a planning meeting organized by the UK. Tom Wells, the representative, mentioned that the ‘interested countries’ largely come from Europe and the Commonwealth but did not specify any nations.
