In remarks made earlier today (May 12, 2025), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the possibility of Donald Trump visiting Istanbul, where peace talks regarding Ukraine are expected to take place this coming Thursday (May 15, 2025). “I just heard President Trump’s statement. Very important words,” Zelenskyy began, emphasizing his support for Trump’s proposal of a full and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine with sufficient duration to serve as a basis for diplomacy. He added that Ukraine is ready to uphold its end of the ceasefire. Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed his backing for Trump’s idea of direct negotiations with Putin, openly stating his readiness for a meeting. “I will be in Turkey. I hope the Russians won’t avoid the meeting,” he said. Zelenskyy also highlighted that Ukraine would appreciate it if President Trump could join them at the meeting in Turkey. Earlier, Trump mentioned the possibility of attending the encounter between Zelenskyy and Putin in Turkey on Thursday to end the war. “I think there can be a good outcome from Thursday’s meeting in Turkey between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump stated. He considered flying there but noted his busy schedule.
