Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed doubt regarding Russia’s intention to adhere to the upcoming three-day ceasefire coinciding with Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, 2025. Speaking on May 4, 2025, Zelenskyy stated that he “does not believe” Russia will respect the truce proposed by President Putin, which spans from May 8 to May 10. According to Moscow, this move aims to test Kyiv’s willingness for peace. However, Zelenskyy, alongside Czech President Petr Pavel, emphasized distrust based on previous failed ceasefires. Despite a brief pause during Easter in April, neither side fully observed the cessation of hostilities. In March, Russia rejected an unconditional 30-day ceasefire proposed by Kyiv and Washington. Citing ongoing attacks, including over 200 recorded assaults last Saturday, Zelenskyy argued there is no trust in Russian promises. He reiterated the need for increased pressure on Russia to ensure genuine actions toward ending the war. Meanwhile, during his two-day state visit to Prague, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of diplomatic efforts and praised the Czech Republic’s robust support for Ukraine since the 2022 invasion, particularly in supplying artillery shells and hosting refugees.
