Zelenskyy: Peace Talks Were ‘Theater’ if Unsuccessful – Demands Unconditional Ceasefire in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not mince words during a speech today (May 16, 2025) in Tirana at the European Political Community Summit regarding the peace talks held in Istanbul concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Zelenskyy stated that the international community “must respond” to Russia if the peace talks prove to be nothing more than mere ‘theater,’ implying they were a charade to create impressions. He emphasized that the world needs to react strongly, including sanctions against Russia’s energy sector and banks. “Pressure must increase until real progress is achieved,” he stressed. Zelenskyy reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire, saying, “We need a definitive end to the bloodshed so diplomacy can have a real chance.” The Ukrainian leader insisted, “Our first priority is a full, unconditional, and honest ceasefire.” He added, “This must happen immediately to stop human losses and establish a stable foundation for diplomacy.” If Russian representatives in Istanbul could not even agree to a truce or ceasefire, it would confirm that Putin continues to undermine diplomatic efforts, Zelenskyy concluded. In a social media post, Zelenskyy expressed his readiness for direct negotiations with Putin in Turkey but lamented the lack of agreement from the Russian side.
