Zelenskyy Hopes Trump Will Bring ‘Lasting Peace’ to Ukraine by 2025

Rapid developments are unfolding in Ukraine following the Kyiv-Washington agreement and the talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Trump mentioned a “very good” hour-long phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart. This was the first conversation between Trump and Zelenskyy since the latter’s controversial visit to Washington, where Zelenskyy nearly faced rejection from the White House. However, Zelenskyy decided not to escalate tensions and pursued a new meeting between Ukrainian and American delegations in Jeddah, where both countries reached an agreement that could potentially end Russia’s war on Ukraine. According to BBC, after the phone call, Zelenskyy stated that “lasting peace can be achieved this year” under Trump’s leadership. He clarified that they discussed only one power plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is already under Russian control, while avoiding specifics about Ukraine’s broader nuclear issues. Notably, during his phone call with Trump, Putin rejected the proposal for an extended ceasefire. During their conversation, Zelenskyy expressed openness to a partial ceasefire involving a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure, railways, and port facilities but warned that Ukraine would retaliate if Moscow violated the terms of any truce. “Until we agree (with Russia) and have a corresponding document for even a partial ceasefire, I think everything will remain uncertain,” Zelenskyy said, referring to drones and missiles.
