An incredible and unexpected event unfolded near Yemen’s territorial waters, where a ship carrying thousands of sheep capsized and ran aground off the open coast of Aden. Videos show Yemeni residents desperately trying to save hundreds of sheep from the Red Sea after the commercial vessel ran aground at Ras Al-Ara in Yemen’s Lahj province. The ship had departed from Somalia and was headed toward Djibouti when the incident occurred. Footage circulating from activists shows the ship struggling in the waters of the Gulf of Aden, listing heavily under the weight of its livestock cargo before capsizing. Reports mentioned numbers ranging from thousands to nearly a million sheep, though most local sources confirm the number was in the thousands. A group of fishermen immediately mobilized after the shipwreck – locals managed to rescue several crew members, reportedly Somali nationals, along with many of the sheep. However, despite their swift efforts, more than 160 sheep drowned.
