Lamine Yamal was visibly angered after Spain’s friendly match against Egypt, having heard sections of the Spanish crowd chanting a racist, anti-Muslim slogan. As a practicing Muslim of Moroccan descent, Yamal left the stadium upset and, in his first public statement following the incident, strongly condemned the behavior of some fans.
“Blasphemous and Unacceptable”
In his social media post, Yamal wrote: “Yesterday at the stadium, the chant ‘Whoever doesn’t f*** is Muslim’ was heard. I know it was directed at the opposing team and wasn’t aimed personally at me—but as a Muslim, it remains blasphemous and unacceptable. I understand not all fans are like this, but to those who sing such things: using religion as mockery in a stadium makes you appear ignorant and racist. Football is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated—not used to disrespect people for who they are or what they believe.”
He concluded the message by thanking supporters who attended the match and expressed anticipation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
