Xanthi: Garbage Truck Falls into Pothole, Bursts Water Pipe, Floods Apartment Building

Unbelievable scenes unfolded at dawn on Sunday (1 February 2026) when a Xanthi municipality garbage truck fell into a pothole during waste collection, damaging a water supply pipe. The incident occurred on Andreas Dimitriou Street in Xanthi, near the 1st Onassis Gymnasium. The truck’s fall into the open pothole ruptured a water pipe, causing high-pressure water to gush out—reaching up to the first floor of a nearby apartment building, as captured in video footage by xanthinews.gr. For safety reasons, traffic on the street was temporarily halted, and emergency crews rushed to the site to repair the damage. The garbage truck was removed with assistance from a military vehicle. Repair efforts continued to restore water supply and assess local damages.
