A tragic outcome followed a serious incident at a shooting range in Malevizi, near Heraklion on the island of Crete. The 40-year-old woman who sustained a gunshot wound during the incident later died from her injuries.

According to reports, the woman — originally from Thessaloniki — was visiting Heraklion and had gone to the range to practice shooting as a guest. Shortly before the incident, she reportedly asked the range instructor to step back, saying: “Move a bit further away — you’re making me anxious.” Moments later, she turned the firearm toward herself and fired, sustaining a severe neck wound.

An EKAB ambulance rushed to the scene, and emergency responders worked urgently to stabilize her during transport to hospital. She was admitted to the Venizelio General Hospital in Heraklion, where she was intubated — but succumbed to her injuries shortly afterward.

No Accident, But Intentional Act

The president of the Malevizi Shooting Club — who was also her instructor — stated clearly that the incident was not an accident, but a deliberate act. He said the woman had been following safety instructions normally and had shown no prior signs of distress or concern.

“She asked me to take two steps back because I was making her anxious. As soon as I stepped away, she placed the gun under her neck and shot herself,” he recounted.

Police responded to the scene and are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
