France: Aerial Reinforcements Deployed Amid Escalating Crisis
In France, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered the immediate deployment of the military transport aircraft A400M to fight fires in the Gironde department — a world-renowned wine-producing region famed for its vineyards and Bordeaux wines. The aircraft, normally scheduled to enter wildfire service only at the end of July following technical checks and testing, is being fast-tracked due to the severity of the situation. Equipped with a system capable of dropping up to 20 tons of fire retardant — equivalent to the capacity of two Dash aircraft — it marks a significant escalation in response efforts.
Authorities have evacuated at least 141,000 people since Wednesday night from Gironde and neighboring Landes. Among the hardest-hit areas is the popular tourist destination Cap Ferret peninsula near Bordeaux, where officials ordered full evacuation — both by road and sea.
Social media posts from the region show apocalyptic scenes: red skies, towering flames, and crowds watching fires burn on both sides of massive sand dunes. In Arcachon Bay and communities near Bordeaux, around 3,500 displaced residents are now sheltering at Bordeaux’s exhibition park, which has been converted into an emergency reception center under the city’s metropolitan authority.

A viral video circulating online shows a truck driving directly through a wall of flame in the Madrid region — underscoring the intensity and unpredictability of the blazes. Authorities report over 200,000 people displaced in total across both countries, according to official statements.
