Firefighters mounted an all-night operation against wildfires in Boeotia and Salamis, with conditions now showing marked improvement—particularly in Boeotia, where the blaze that erupted on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, has been largely contained. While active flames have subsided, crews continue tackling smouldering hotspots in the Agios Vlasios area—the fire’s origin point—where it initially broke out in low vegetation.
Salamis Fire Still Active but Under Control
On Salamis Island, firefighting efforts remain ongoing. Though the fire continues to burn, authorities report a significantly improved situation compared to earlier stages. Crews are focused on fully containing the blaze, preventing flare-ups, and securing the perimeter. The fire began at 4:40 p.m. on 25 August in low-lying vegetation and a waste disposal site in Elliniko, near Salamis.
Aerial and Ground Response Scaling Up
At first light on Wednesday, 26 August, two helicopters were deployed for aerial firefighting operations in Boeotia. Additional aircraft stand ready for mobilisation if weather or fire behaviour warrants further support. On the ground, 85 firefighters are operating across four teams from the 1st and 4th Emergency Response Units (EMODE), supported by volunteers and 28 vehicles. The Municipality of Livadeia has also contributed water tankers and heavy machinery to assist the Hellenic Fire Service.
High Fire Risk Remains Across Regions
The Boeotia region remains under Category 3 (high) wildfire risk today. Meanwhile, the Ionian Islands have been placed under Red Code alert—the highest level—due to an extreme (Category 4) fire danger forecast issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection. Attica is currently at yellow alert (moderate-to-high risk). A national fire risk map for 26 August highlights widespread elevated danger across mainland Greece and most island regions.
Evacuation Orders Issued Earlier
Emergency alerts were issued via the 112 emergency system yesterday: at 5:27 p.m., residents of Agios Vlasios and Tsoukalades were advised to prepare for possible evacuation; at 6:14 p.m., an official evacuation order was issued for the broader Tsoukalades area, directing people toward Livadeia for safety.
