Emergency services on the island of Rhodes have been placed on high alert following a wildfire that broke out today (July 4, 2026) at approximately 2:10 p.m. near Mount Attavyros, at a high elevation between the villages of Empona and Agios Isidoros.
Fire Threatened by Strong Winds
The blaze is burning low vegetation in an area without forest cover—but located close to wind turbines—making it especially dangerous due to strong prevailing winds.
Large-Scale Response Underway
A major firefighting operation is underway, with ground crews responding immediately. According to statements made to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency by Christos Eustratiou, Deputy Regional Governor of the Dodecanese, and Michalis Thomatos, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of Rhodes, aerial firefighting units based on the island have been deployed to support ground efforts.
In addition, volunteer organizations and civil protection teams have joined the response, assisting the Hellenic Fire Service in containing the fire and preventing its spread.
