Wildfire in Serres: Firefighters Battle Flames at Wood Processing Plant – 600 Acres Burned

in

Firefighters fought an all-night battle against flames engulfing a wood processing plant in Serres on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Despite the fire spreading out of control and burning at least 600 acres around the facility, firefighting forces managed to contain it within the factory premises. However, the situation remains ongoing.

Although significant firefighting resources arrived at the scene early on, the highly flammable materials stored at the site have made suppression efforts extremely difficult. A total of 90 firefighters with 31 vehicles are currently deployed to combat the blaze.

Initial reports indicate that the fire has completely destroyed the factory’s storage area, 600 acres of low vegetation, and approximately 400 olive trees. Tree trunks and other wooden materials stored inside the facility have also been consumed by the flames. So far, no residential areas are under threat from the fire.

In the evening hours of Tuesday, an alert was sent via the 112 emergency system to local residents, urging them to remain vigilant and follow official instructions. The message read: ‘Forest fire in the area of Neos Souli, Regional Unit of Serres. Stay alert and follow the instructions of the authorities.’
