A wildfire currently raging near Ierapetra on the island of Crete has placed several areas under threat, prompting emergency evacuations and large-scale firefighting efforts. The fire, which began at midday on Tuesday (02/07/2025) in Aghia Fotia, has now spread uncontrollably between the regions of Aghia Fotia and Skinokapsala.
According to reports from local media and official sources, a total of 36 firefighters, several ground units from the 3rd EMOODE, 12 fire trucks, and two helicopters dispatched from Heraklion are actively engaged in combating the blaze. Strong winds have significantly hampered firefighting operations, making it difficult to contain the flames that have already engulfed vast forested areas.
The Greek emergency service 112 issued an alert urging residents in the villages of Aghia Fotia, Aghlia, Gales, and Fermes to evacuate towards Ierapetra. Authorities emphasized that while settlements are not yet directly threatened, the evacuation is precautionary due to the rapid spread of the fire.
Smoke from the fire has reached coastal areas, covering parts of the sea near Makry Gialos. Firefighters, especially those operating aerial support, are working tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching hotel zones and tourist accommodations.
Local officials, including Ierapetra Mayor Manolis Frangoulis and Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Nektarios Papadakis, expressed concern over the situation. They confirmed that evacuations have been completed in targeted areas and that the fire remains a top priority for emergency services.
As of now, the fire continues to burn with intensity, and all available resources remain mobilized to protect both natural land and inhabited zones.
