Wildfire in Ierapetra: Dangerous Rekindling in Fermes and Ahlia – Region Declared in State of Emergency

in

The wildfire in Ierapetra, Crete, continues to rage as firefighting forces battle dangerous rekindlings in the region. Two major outbreaks occurred today—one around 14:00 near Fermes and another just before 17:30 in Ahlia. Firefighters are struggling against the flames amid strong winds that have made suppression efforts increasingly difficult.

Over 300 firefighters remain on-site, supported by aerial water-dropping operations and local volunteers who are assisting with available resources. The situation remains critical, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, though some improvement has been noted compared to yesterday.

In response to the spreading fire, the Civil Protection Authority issued an evacuation alert via SMS through the 112 emergency system at 14:05 today. Residents and visitors in Katharades, Fermes, Koutsounari, and Kakia Skala Lassithiou were urged to evacuate toward Ierapetra following official instructions.

The area has now been declared in a state of emergency after a request from the Municipality of Ierapetra was approved by the National Civil Protection Authority. The declaration applies to the Municipal Unit of Makry Gialos and the Municipal Communities of Ierapetra and Agios Ioannis in the Lassithi region. This status will remain in effect until October 2, 2025, with the possibility of extension depending on ongoing needs.

Initial damage assessments indicate burned farmhouses, structural damage to homes, and disruptions to the power grid. Authorities continue their efforts to contain the blaze while ensuring public safety.
