in

A wildfire broke out on Saturday afternoon (05/07/2025) in the Heraklion region of Crete, specifically in the area of Karkadiotissa. At the site, 24 firefighters with 12 vehicles and one helicopter are currently engaged in efforts to contain the blaze. According to Neakriti, aerial support was deemed necessary due to the fire’s size and the terrain’s morphology, aiming for a swift containment of the fire fronts. The fire is burning through grassland, prompting alarm among local authorities. Strong firefighting forces are operating at the front lines, including crews from Heraklion, Pyrgos, and Moires, supported by a ground team from EMODE. Aerial operations are also underway with a helicopter assisting in suppression efforts. Weather conditions, particularly strong winds blowing in the area, are complicating the work of firefighters who are making every possible effort to control and extinguish the blaze.
