For the second consecutive day on Saturday (05.07.2025), wildfires continue to rage in the Mesochoria region of southern Evia, where firefighting teams remained throughout the night trying to contain the spreading flames. Despite the heroic efforts of firefighters and volunteers, the fire that broke out yesterday has threatened homes in the semi-mountainous village.
The wildfire, which continues to burn uncontrollably near the settlements of Karystos, Mesochoria, and Tsakaios, has grown significantly due to strong winds, making suppression efforts extremely difficult. A new evacuation order was issued for Limnionas via a message from emergency services, while shortly before 4:00 AM, another alert was sent to residents across the broader area. Yesterday, the village of Tsakaios had also been evacuated, with a warning advising people to move towards Styra.
Firefighting forces were reinforced last night with personnel from Thessaly, Peloponnese, and Central Greece. Currently, 160 firefighters are operating with 45 vehicles and eight ground units. According to official reports, the fire front has now split into four main sections, two of which are moving toward populated areas.
One section is heading toward Nea Styra, where firefighters are working hard to prevent the fire from crossing the road leading to nearby villages. Another front, located southwest of Tsakaios, is already at the edge of the settlement, but coordinated ground efforts have so far prevented it from advancing further.
By sunset, 14 aircraft and four helicopters were involved in aerial operations. At first light, water-dropping flights resumed. Local authorities remain on high alert, monitoring the situation minute by minute, and coordinating protective measures for residents.
The Municipality of Karystos has placed municipal facilities on standby to accommodate displaced citizens if temporary housing becomes necessary.
