A wildfire broke out on Monday, 13 July 2026, in the Kaló Limáni area near Skala Horio on the northern coast of Lesbos. According to local outlet stonisi.gr, the fire ignited in dry grassland and is believed to have been caused by an electricity pole belonging to the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDHE).
Immediate Response Mobilised
The blaze erupted close to a residential settlement and an adjacent taverna, prompting an urgent deployment of ground and aerial firefighting resources. Eighteen firefighters from the 12th Emergency Response Unit (EMODE) responded, supported by one infantry team, five vehicles, two fixed-wing aircraft (PZL type), and one helicopter.
Volunteers and municipal water tankers also joined the effort, as confirmed in an official tweet from the Hellenic Fire Service.
Public Alert Issued
Shortly after 4:00 p.m., the national emergency number 112 sent an alert to mobile phones across the region, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow instructions from authorities.
Firefighters are working intensively to contain the fire before it threatens homes or other infrastructure.
