A wildfire broke out in low-lying vegetation near Kalopigado, a location in the municipality of Lavreotiki in southeastern Attica, on the afternoon of Tuesday, 25 August 2026. The Fire Service’s Operations Centre was alerted at 3:40 p.m., and shortly after 4:00 p.m., residents received an emergency alert via Greece’s 112 emergency system advising them to remain on standby and follow official instructions.
Evacuation Orders Issued
At 4:15 p.m., a second 112 alert was issued ordering the immediate evacuation of the nearby settlements of Agia Marina and Tsonima — both located within the Regional Unit of East Attica — with residents directed toward the Lavrio National Road.
The Greek Emergency Response System (112 Greece) confirmed the incident on social media, referencing the area as ‘Treachantiera’ — a local geographic designation — and urging vigilance and compliance with authorities’ guidance. A link to real-time updates was shared alongside official accounts of the Hellenic Fire Service and Hellenic Police.
Large-Scale Response Underway
In response to the blaze, 70 firefighters were deployed, including three ground teams from the 1st Mobile Unit of the Fire Service (1st EMODE), supported by volunteers. A total of 23 vehicles, three helicopters, and two fixed-wing aircraft were mobilised for aerial firefighting operations. The Lavreotiki Municipality activated its emergency support plan, providing water tankers to assist frontline crews.
The Hellenic Fire Service confirmed the reinforcement of personnel and equipment in a subsequent update, noting the coordinated involvement of ground units, aviation assets, and volunteer forces.
Monitoring and Investigation
The area remains under high fire-risk conditions (Level 3) according to national risk assessments. Throughout the incident, the National Crisis Management Centre (ESKEDIK) has maintained continuous situational awareness using drone-based thermal and optical imaging.
An investigative team specialising in arson-related crimes — the East Attica Arson Investigation Unit — has been deployed to determine the cause of the fire.
