Firefighters and Civil Protection units on Rhodes have been placed on high alert following a wildfire that broke out today (4 July 2026) at approximately 14:10 near Mount Attavyros, at a high elevation between the villages of Empona and Agios Isidoros.

Challenging Conditions

The fire is burning low vegetation in an area without forest cover—but close to wind turbines—making it especially hazardous due to strong prevailing winds.

Large-Scale Response Underway

A major suppression operation is underway. According to statements made to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency by Christos Eustratiou, Deputy Regional Governor of the Dodecanese, and Michalis Thomatos, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of Rhodes, aerial firefighting assets based on the island have been mobilized and are now airborne to support ground efforts.

Volunteer organizations and Civil Protection teams have also joined the response, working alongside firefighters to quickly contain the blaze and prevent its spread.
