A wildfire erupted in an agricultural-forestry area near Agios Georgios in Methana, southwest of Athens, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
Emergency Response Underway
According to the Hellenic Fire Service, 65 firefighters are currently deployed at the scene, including three ground teams from the 9th Emergency Response Unit (EMODE) and 19 vehicles. Additional support is being provided by municipal water tankers from local authorities.
Aerial Support Deployed
Three firefighting aircraft and two helicopters are conducting water-dropping operations over the affected area. The National Emergency Response System (112 Greece) issued an alert urging residents to remain on standby and follow official instructions.
Monitoring and Investigation
The Hellenic Fire Service’s Emergency Coordination and Information Centre (ESKEDIK) is monitoring the fire continuously using drone footage — combining visual and thermal imaging. Meanwhile, the Argolis Arson Investigation Team has been dispatched to the site to determine the cause of the blaze.
