White Blanket Over Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria, and Florina – Major Road Disruptions in Northern Greece

Heavy snowfall has blanketed northern Greece in recent hours, covering Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria, and Florina in snow. Intense snowfall has severely disrupted road traffic, with vehicles permitted to travel only with winter tires or snow chains—particularly on key routes in Kozani and Florina. Mandatory use of specialized equipment applies on the Florina–Kastoria Provincial Road (via Vitsi), the Kozani–Ioannina National Highway, the Kastoria–Ioannina Provincial Road (via Kotyli), the Florina–Kryspallou Border Crossing National Highway, and the Aetos–Nymfaio Provincial Road. Stunning snowy images from these cities evoke a serene, Christmas-like winter landscape. The Vasilitsa ski resort is already covered in over 40 cm of snow, making it an ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts in the coming days. Magical snow-covered scenes also emerge from the village of Milia in Metsovo. According to the General Regional Police Directorate of Western Macedonia, road restrictions are as follows: In Grevena, temporary bans on trucks over 3.5 tons were lifted on the Egnatia Odos between Venetikou (km 150) and Panagia (km 121) as of 12:00 today (01-02-2026); however, such vehicles remain banned on the Grevena–Trikala National Highway (EO 15) from km 1 to km 41.5—except for emergency, salt-carrying, snowplow, and roadside assistance vehicles equipped with chains. In Kastoria, winter tires or chains are mandatory on specified stretches of the Florina–Kastoria, Kozani–Ioannina, and Kastoria–Ioannina roads. In Kozani, traffic flows normally across all national, provincial, and municipal roads—including the Egnatia Odos and its Kozani–Ptolemaida branch (A-27). In Florina, chain/tire requirements apply on the Florina–Kastoria Provincial Road (via Vitsi) and other designated segments.
