What to Watch Out for to Avoid Having Your Bag Stolen

We often carry credit cards, money, and various personal items in our bags and wallets. However, it’s crucial not to carry large amounts of cash in them but only what’s necessary for daily needs. When traveling by car, avoid leaving personal items exposed in the passenger seat. Extra caution is also needed when using public transportation or shopping in crowded stores, as skilled pickpockets exploit these conditions. Potential thieves target both stationary and moving targets, with gangs even approaching pedestrians to snatch bags/wallets. For citizen protection, the Greek Police provide useful advice on how to avoid having your bag stolen. Do not carry large sums of money in your wallet, bag, or pocket. Don’t place your wallet in a back pocket. Avoid keeping credit cards and checks in the same pocket or bag. Refrain from carrying a bag when shopping in crowded areas, especially during holidays. In crowded spaces, secure your bag and wallet well. Never leave bags open. Avoid leaving bags outside clothing store fitting rooms. When in outdoor or leisure areas, don’t place your bag on adjacent seats or at your feet. Walk on the inner side of the sidewalk, facing away from traffic. Keep your bag securely on the inner side of the sidewalk near buildings, not the road. Do not leave your bag visible inside the car, especially on the passenger seat; instead, keep it under the seat. If someone driving a vehicle approaches asking for directions, avoid getting close to their vehicle. Avoid walking in dark and deserted streets, especially when alone. Always be alert for suspicious individuals and movements. If you become a victim of theft or witness an attack, shout for help loudly. If you cannot resist and retrieve your bag, remember that your health and physical integrity are more valuable. Try to note the characteristics of the attacker and any vehicle used. Report any attacks immediately to the police, informing them if your ID or other important documents were inside the bag or wallet.
