On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) released new data on the West Nile virus in Greece, including the total case count since the beginning of the year. According to EODY’s weekly report on the epidemiological surveillance of the virus, a total of 91 domestic cases have been diagnosed and investigated from January 1 to October 1, 2025. Of these, 73 cases presented symptoms affecting the Central Nervous System (CNS), such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis, while 18 showed mild or no CNS symptoms. During the past week, four new domestic cases were confirmed. Additionally, two imported cases were recorded—one exposed in Serbia and one in Italy—though these are not included in the overall national analysis. Since the start of the year, eight deaths have been reported among patients over the age of 65 (median age: 80 years, range: 66–86 years) who suffered CNS-related complications from the virus. One additional death linked to the virus was attributed to other causes and is not counted in the official toll. The outbreak has affected 40 municipalities across 22 regional units, including Attica, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Achaia, Evia, and Heraklion. Health authorities expect further cases in the coming weeks as transmission season continues.
