On alert to the West Nile virus the experts call, at a time when cases and deaths are increasing. Our attention to protecting us from infected mosquitoes is being asked by doctors, with the West Nile virus recording an outbreak in our country. Two deaths occurred in the first week of August, according to the latest data. As announced by the National Public Health Organization (EODY), 22 new cases were recorded in the first week of August, while two more patients lost the battle to be held in life. Thus, the total number of people affected by the West Nile virus from early July to 7 August 2024 rose to 55 . These incidents concern domestic transmission (infection within Greece). Four cases where transmission occurred in foreign countries have also been reported. However, the EOB does not take into account imported cases in its analyses and is limited to domestic ones. According to his data, from the 55 domestic cases of infection caused by the West Nile virus 42 were severe, as patients had manifestations from the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord). These events were: Encephalitis and/or Meningitis and/or Acute loose paralysis The remaining 13 cases were mild. The youngest of patients with CNS events was 36 years of age. The oldest was 92 years old. The EODY points out that in each case with CNS infection, approximately 140 other patients who are asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms correspond and thus are not reported. The hospitals Of the 55 patients infected with mosquitoes within Greece, the vast majority (49) needed hospitalisation. 30 have been discharged, while still being hospitalized 11.
