Strong winds are set to dominate this week’s weather across Greece, with meteorologists warning of an elevated fire risk in the coming days. According to forecaster Olga Papavgiou, Monday, 13 June 2026, will bring mostly sunny skies, temperatures reaching up to 37°C — particularly in Aetolia-Acarnania — and northerly winds gusting up to 7 on the Beaufort scale.

Localized Thunderstorms and Intensifying Winds

From midday, isolated thunderstorms are expected over the Peloponnese and the Pindus mountain range. Winds will strengthen further, reaching 7 Beaufort in the southeastern Aegean and the Ionian Sea. At the same time, the Vardaris wind is forecast to intensify around Thessaloniki, prompting an official ‘orange alert’ for wildfire danger in the region.

Regional Outlook

In Attica, there’s a low chance of isolated thunderstorms, with temperatures peaking at 35°C and winds up to 5 Beaufort. In Thessaloniki, light thunderstorm activity is possible — especially in Chalkidiki — with highs of 34°C and Vardaris winds reaching 5 Beaufort.

Tuesday to Friday Forecast

Tuesday will see strong northerlies intensify across the southeastern Aegean, with gusts up to 8 Beaufort. Severe thunderstorm conditions are expected in southern Crete. On Wednesday, thunderstorms are likely along northern borders, while strong northerlies (7 Beaufort) will affect the eastern Aegean. Temperatures will climb sharply — reaching 38°C nationally and hitting 39°C locally in Central Greece, Thessaly, and Macedonia.

By Thursday, atmospheric instability will increase, bringing scattered thunderstorms to northern mountainous areas from noon onward. Temperatures will remain high. Instability continues into Friday, and early signs of a heatwave are expected over the weekend — though confirmation will depend on developments in the coming days.

Wildfire Risk Alert

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has issued an ‘orange alert’ — indicating very high fire danger — for Thessaloniki and Kilkis. Several other regions across mainland Greece and the islands face ‘high fire risk’ (Category 3), according to today’s national fire danger map.

Today’s Weather Summary (13 June 2026)

Central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia, and eastern Sterea will see occasional cloud cover, increasing during midday and afternoon hours, with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms. Elsewhere, skies will be generally clear, though brief cloud development is possible over inland areas during the afternoon — triggering localized showers in mountainous zones.

Winds will blow from northerly directions: 4–5 Beaufort inland, 6 Beaufort over open seas, and locally up to 7 Beaufort. Temperatures will remain stable: up to 35°C — locally 36°C — in inland areas, and 33–34°C across the islands, with slightly higher values expected in the Dodecanese.
