Weather Today: Rain, Thunderstorms and Saharan Dust

Intense rain and thunderstorms are expected across Greece on February 5, 2026, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), accompanied by Saharan dust. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and localized hail are forecast for western regions, northeastern mainland areas, and the eastern Aegean islands. Very strong southerly winds—reaching 8–9 Beaufort in the eastern Aegean—will prevail. Phenomena will be locally intense: (a) in northern Ionian Sea (Corfu, Diapontia Islands, Paxoi) and Epirus until early morning; (b) across the rest of the Ionian islands (Lefkada, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zakynthos) and western Central Greece until evening; (c) in western and southern Peloponnese until late night; (d) in eastern Macedonia and Thrace until midnight; (e) from noon in the northern and eastern Aegean islands; and (f) from afternoon in the Dodecanese. Light snowfall is expected over mountainous mainland areas. Saharan dust transport is favored, especially over central and southern Greece. Winds will initially blow from southern directions (5–7 Beaufort, up to 9 in the eastern Aegean), shifting to westerly/northwesterly from afternoon onward and gradually weakening. Temperatures will drop slightly, reaching 12–14°C in northern mainland areas, 15–17°C in the Ionian Sea and most of the mainland, and 18–19°C in remaining island regions. In Macedonia and Thrace, cloud cover with rain and isolated thunderstorms is expected, locally intense until midnight. Weak snowfall is likely over Macedonian mountains. Winds: southeastern 4–6 Beaufort, locally 7 at sea, shifting to westerly/northwesterly and weakening from afternoon. Temperatures: 7–14°C (3–4°C lower in western Macedonia). In the Ionian islands, Epirus, western Central Greece, and western Peloponnese: increased clouds with rain and scattered thunderstorms, locally intense, easing from noon in the north. Light snow over mountainous Epirus. Winds: southerly/southwesterly 5–6 Beaufort, locally 7 in southern Ionian Sea, shifting to westerly/northwesterly and weakening. Temperatures: 10–16°C (2–3°C lower inland Epirus). In Thessaly, eastern Central Greece, Evia, and eastern Peloponnese: clouds with rain and scattered thunderstorms, improving from evening. Winds: southerly/southwesterly 5–7 Beaufort, shifting to westerly/northwesterly 4–6 Beaufort from evening. Temperatures: 10–17°C (2–3°C lower in northern areas).
