Weather: Thermal Camera Records Over 50 Degrees in Athens – Areas to ‘Boil’ Under Heat Dome

in

A heatwave is sweeping across many regions of the country, raising alarms as temperatures continue to rise. A thermal camera operated by the Municipality of Athens recorded temperatures over 50 degrees Celsius, particularly in the Lykavittos area. The recent surge of the heatwave, which has hit all of Europe with record-breaking temperatures, is now making its presence felt in Greece. In Athens, specifically on Mount Lykavittos, a thermal camera installed by the Municipality of Athens captured extremely high temperatures exceeding 50°C. Notably, materials such as concrete, asphalt, and metallic structures registered mercury levels reaching up to 100°C! This ‘heat dome’ will bring scorching conditions until Wednesday, July 9th. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), a new heatwave is expected to push temperatures beyond 40°C, prompting an updated extreme weather bulletin. This wave of intense heat started on Sunday, July 6, 2025, and will last until the upcoming Wednesday, with gradual temperature increases starting from Macedonia and spreading throughout the rest of Greece. The highest values (over 40°C) are expected from Monday, July 7, 2025, in the inland areas of continental Greece, especially in western, central, and northern regions. Along the coastal areas of mainland Greece, maximum temperatures will be 2 to 4°C lower than those recorded inland. Relative humidity levels will remain low (approximately 20% to 30% during midday hours inland). Minimum temperatures on Monday, Tuesday (July 8, 2025), and Wednesday in urban centers will remain high, ranging between 26°C and 28°C. On Sunday, high temperatures dominate across all inland and Ionian areas. Maximum values reach: a) 38 to 39°C, possibly locally hitting 40°C in Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and western Sterea. b) 37 to 39°C in eastern Sterea and the Peloponnese. c) 35 to 36°C on the Ionian Islands. On Monday, very high temperatures are expected on the Ionian Islands and all inland areas, while temperatures will rise in the eastern insular region. Maximum values are projected to reach: a) 39 to 40°C and locally up to 41°C in continental Greece, and 36 to 38°C on the Ionian Islands, islands of the Eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese. On Tuesday (July 8, 2025) and Wednesday (July 9, 2025), a slight decrease in high temperatures is anticipated in the Ionian Sea and western inland areas, while a minor increase (about 1 to 2°C) is expected in eastern inland areas and the Aegean. Maximum values are estimated to reach up to 41 to 42°C in certain inland areas.
