Weather: Storm Advances from Ionian Sea – 112 Alert for Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms

A weather alert has been issued by Greece’s Civil Protection as severe storms are expected to hit nearly the entire country. On Wednesday evening (01.10.2025), the emergency number 112 sent a warning message to residents in the Ionian Islands, as well as in Achaia, Elis, and Messinia. Intense thunderstorms are already affecting the Ionian islands, prompting activation of emergency services urging caution. The 112 message stated: “Alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the Ionian Islands region from Wednesday night until midday Thursday (02/10/2025). Exercise caution when traveling and follow instructions from authorities.” Corfu is currently experiencing heavy rain, with extreme weather conditions expected early Thursday morning, according to the Hellenic Meteorological Service (EMY). In northern Corfu, near Drastis Cape, a British family’s car got stuck in mud on a dirt road; firefighters intervened to transfer them safely to Peroulades main road. No other incidents have been reported so far. Similar alerts were issued for Achaia, Elis, and Messinia, effective from Thursday morning through the afternoon. Meanwhile, Zakynthos mayor announced school closures for Thursday due to adverse conditions. EMY’s special bulletin warns of dangerous weather from Thursday to Friday noon. Cold air masses from Central Europe will trigger strong rains, thunderstorms, and localized hail across most of Greece. Affected areas include the Ionian Islands, Western Greece, Peloponnese, Central and Eastern regions, Attica, Crete, the Sporades, and later, the Eastern Aegean and Thrace. Severe conditions are expected in the Ionian Islands (especially Zakynthos and Kefalonia), southern Peloponnese, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the Dodecanese.
