A prolonged heatwave is expected to take hold across much of Greece starting this Sunday, with temperatures climbing as high as 39°C in several areas. Local thunderstorms are receding, and the weekend will be warm—peaking on Sunday.

Heat Peaks Sunday, Then Brief Dip

A slight, temporary drop in temperatures is forecast for Monday and Tuesday due to strengthening northerly winds. However, from Wednesday onward, heat will build again—setting the stage for another rise in thermometers.

No Full-Blown Heatwave—Yet

While no organized, nationwide heatwave is expected through the end of next week, localized highs of 38–39°C are likely—particularly in inland and low-lying regions. Meteorologists are monitoring a developing hot air mass moving eastward from the western Mediterranean, which could affect Greece during the third decade of July.

Weekend Forecast

Saturday will bring generally fine weather and abundant sunshine nationwide. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible over mountainous areas of the Pindus range and the Peloponnese. Temperatures will range between 34°C and 36°C, reaching 37°C locally—with stronger winds expected across the Aegean Sea.

Sunday: Hottest Day So Far

Sunday is expected to be the warmest day of the period, with highs of 37–38°C widespread—and possibly hitting 39°C in Thessaly. Meanwhile, isolated thunderstorms may develop over northern mountainous zones, especially in Macedonia and Thrace.

Midweek Shift

From Monday, northerly winds will strengthen, causing a modest temperature dip—but significantly raising wildfire risk due to strong, dry gusts. On Tuesday, meltemi winds will remain robust—locally reaching force 8 on the Beaufort scale—while skies stay mostly clear.

Wednesday Onward: Heat Returns

By Wednesday, winds will ease and temperatures will climb once more—reaching 36–38°C, with even higher values possible in enclosed continental areas. According to meteo.gr, while temperatures will rise starting Sunday, 12 July 2026, this spell does not yet meet the official criteria for a heatwave.

Extreme Heat Possible in Microclimates

In certain microclimates—especially sheltered, low-elevation inland zones—the mercury could briefly touch 40°C. A table (not included here) outlines forecast maximum temperatures for seven major urban centers from Sunday 12 to Tuesday 14 July.
