The heat dome that turned Europe into a furnace is now spreading over Greece, causing high temperatures to torment the country until midweek. According to current forecasting models, the heatwave will last until Wednesday (July 9, 2025), with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius and even reaching 42 degrees in some areas.

Special attention is required for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. The country will feel like a burning oven, with meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas emphasizing that Tuesday will be the most difficult day, with local temperatures hitting 42°C.

Among the cities expected to experience extreme heat on Monday include:
– Orestiada, Larissa, Trikala at 40°C
– Athens, Serres, Farsala, Kilkis at 39°C
– Thessaloniki at 38°C

Temperatures will rise further on Tuesday, with the following readings expected:
– Larissa: 42°C
– Soufli, Farsala: 41°C
– Kilkis, Domokos: 40°C
– Thebes: 39°C

In Attica, the highest temperatures will occur on Wednesday rather than Tuesday, with mercury potentially rising to 40°C in the basin.

Meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos from ERT explained that Tuesday and Wednesday will be the hottest days, with temperatures reaching 41–42°C in eastern inland regions. Strong northwesterly winds will begin in the afternoon of Wednesday from the west, and by Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop by 5–7°C across the country.

On Monday, skies will be mostly clear with some clouds appearing over mountainous areas in the afternoon. Winds in the Ionian Sea will blow from westerly directions at 4–5 Beaufort, while in the Aegean they will be northerly to northwesterly up to 5 Beaufort. Daytime temperatures will reach 39–40°C inland, locally peaking at 41°C. In the Ionian and eastern Aegean seas, temperatures will range between 36–38°C, while Cyclades and Crete will see temperatures around 31–34°C.

In Attica, sunny weather is expected with variable winds at 3–4 Beaufort and temporary northern winds reaching 5 Beaufort in Evripos Strait. Temperatures will range between 24–38°C, with coastal areas being 2–3°C cooler.

Thessaloniki will enjoy clear skies with light winds and temperatures ranging between 24–37°C.

Tuesday will bring more intense heat, especially in eastern regions, where temperatures may again hit 41–42°C.

An updated special weather alert issued on Sunday warns about extremely high temperatures continuing through Wednesday (July 9, 2025). The highest values—over 40°C—are expected starting Monday (July 7, 2025) in the interior parts of continental Greece. A noticeable temperature drop is forecast for Thursday (July 10, 2025) across the country.

Key notes:
– Coastal areas will be 2–4°C cooler than inland regions.
– Humidity levels will remain low, dropping to around 20–30% during midday in inland areas.
– Minimum temperatures in urban centers on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will remain high, hovering around 27–29°C.
