Wintry weather conditions are set to take over starting this afternoon, with a sharp drop in temperature, strong storms, and heavy snowfall. The weather change will begin in the northern regions of Greece and gradually spread to other areas. The cold will be intense, with snow expected even at semi-mountainous locations. The National Meteorological Service has issued warnings indicating that bad weather is expected to persist until Thursday. Due to the low temperatures, frost will form in some parts of the country. Snowfall is forecasted in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas of Macedonia, Thrace (areas above 400 meters), as well as in the mountains of Epirus and Thessaly. The temperature drop will start Sunday afternoon in Macedonia and Thrace, spreading to central and southern Greece by Monday and Tuesday. Today, Sunday, scattered showers and isolated storms are expected in the western, northern, and eastern Aegean regions, with local showers predicted in the remaining continental areas and Crete by noon and afternoon. During the evening, weather phenomena will intensify in the northeast, bringing snow to northern mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. Temperatures will vary significantly across different regions. Winds will blow from westerly directions at 3-5 Beaufort, while in the east, southerly winds will reach 3-6 Beaufort, turning northward and strengthening to 7 Beaufort overnight in the northern areas. For Monday, clouds will increase intermittently across most of the country with local showers and sporadic storms in the east. Weather events will be strong in places like eastern Thessaly, Sporades, Evia, and the islands of the Eastern Aegean until midday. Snowfall is expected in central and northern mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, becoming dense in the morning in the mountains of Epirus and Thessaly and continuing until early afternoon in parts of Macedonia and Thrace above 400 meters. By Tuesday, scattered showers will occur mainly in eastern mainland Greece, Crete, and the Dodecanese, with isolated storms in the south. Intermittent snowfall will affect the mountainous inland areas. North winds will strengthen to 7 Beaufort in the central and southern Aegean. Temperatures will fall significantly in central and northern Greece, where they won’t exceed 9-11 degrees Celsius. In the rest of the country, temperatures will range between 17-19 degrees, and in Crete, between 20-22 degrees Celsius. Frost is expected in northern mainland areas during the evening. By Wednesday, increased cloudiness with local showers is expected in the west and south, especially in the Peloponnese, with isolated storms weakening by night. In the rest of the country, there will be occasional showers. Light snowfall will occur in the mountains. North winds will continue to blow at 4-6 Beaufort, gradually reaching 7 Beaufort in southeastern areas. Temperatures will remain low for the season. Frost will form during the mornings and evenings in central and northern mainland areas, being particularly strong in the north. Finally, on Thursday, scattered clouds will bring local showers initially in the east and later in the mainland with possible local rain. Light snowfall is expected in the mountains. Northwesterly winds will prevail at 4-5 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 Beaufort in southeastern areas. Maximum temperatures will slightly rise, but overall, they will remain low.
