After enjoying temperatures in the high 30s over the weekend (March 15-16, 2025), which drew people to the beaches, a dramatic weather change is set to occur. Starting Tuesday (March 18, 2025), winter-like conditions, including snow in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, are expected across Greece. The unseasonably cold weather forecasted mid-March will bring significantly lower temperatures, which could help clear the African dust that has been affecting many residents, especially those with respiratory issues. On Sunday, temperatures reached up to 30°C, leading many to seek relief by the sea. However, this warmth will be short-lived as a significant drop in temperature is anticipated.
Meteorologist Yiannis Kallianos of MEGA TV reported via Facebook that following the extreme rise in mercury, winter will return on Tuesday with a temperature drop of 17°C to 20°C, strong winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort, rain, and snow in higher-altitude areas. Temperatures in Athens are forecasted to fall from 28°C on Sunday to just 10°C by Wednesday.
The detailed forecast indicates clear skies for most areas on Monday, but with African dust persisting. Scattered clouds and local showers are predicted for parts of western Peloponnese, western Sterea Hellas, Epirus, Macedonia, and Thrace. In Attica, sparse clouds and mostly sunny intervals are expected, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 22°C. Thessaloniki will see cloudy conditions with possible showers, where temperatures will range from 9°C to 21°C.
By Tuesday, rapid weather changes are expected, bringing unstable conditions, showers, thunderstorms, and a sharp drop in temperature across most mainland areas. Wednesday may see even colder temperatures, with snow potentially falling as far south as Attica. Meteorological Service Director Theodoros Kolonas highlighted the dramatic shift, noting that while Florina experienced highs of 28.7°C last Saturday, temperatures there could plummet to just 3°C by Tuesday.
This sudden weather pattern reversal will make the coming days feel like winter again, with Tuesday seeing a vertical temperature drop of up to 20°C and snowfall in several regions. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) and Meteo forecasts confirm these developments, warning of strong northern winds and further cooling by Thursday.
