This week begins with strong northerly winds—locally reaching up to 7 on the Beaufort scale—particularly across the Aegean Sea. According to meteorologist Yiannis Kallianos, these meltemi winds will persist until Tuesday, June 30, 2026, before gradually easing and giving way to rising temperatures.

Fire Risk Remains Elevated

The combination of strong winds, high temperatures, and dry vegetation significantly increases the risk of wildfires. In response, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has issued a yellow alert for 28 regions nationwide today.

Heat Builds From Tuesday Onward

From Tuesday, winds will weaken and temperatures will climb steadily. Local highs are expected to reach 39°C—particularly in lowland areas of Central Macedonia, including near Thessaloniki. The Thessalian Plain will see highs of up to 38°C, while western Central Greece—especially around Agrinio—is forecast to hit 37–38°C.

Hot Spots Through Thursday

Between Tuesday and Thursday, elevated temperatures will also affect parts of eastern Central Greece—including Phthiotis, Boeotia, and central Evia—as well as heat-sensitive areas in Corinthia and Argolis, where readings of 37–38°C are likely.

No Extreme Heatwave Expected

Kallianos emphasizes that this warming trend does not constitute an extreme or prolonged heatwave—unlike the deadly event currently affecting parts of Central Europe. Instead, it reflects a typical summer pattern for Greece: warm, but within seasonal norms. Isolated thunderstorms or brief showers are possible from Wednesday onward, especially over inland mainland areas.

In his latest update, Kallianos notes: “July begins relatively warm. This new week starts hot across most of Greece—but without signs of an intense or extreme heatwave. Meltemi winds will remain strong—up to 7 Beaufort—in the Aegean through Tuesday, further amplifying wildfire risk due to heat, dryness, and wind. From Tuesday onward, as winds ease, temperatures will rise slightly. Most inland areas will reach 36–37°C, with local peaks of 38°C—and possibly even 39°C in parts of Central Macedonia.”
