Though summer has officially arrived and temperatures across Greece have already surpassed 30°C, rain isn’t quite done yet. According to meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas, scattered showers are highly likely in Attica on Friday, 12 June 2026, and Saturday, 13 June 2026.
Rain as a Temporary Fire Buffer
Kolydas described the expected rainfall as ‘welcome’ — not just for relief from the heat, but more importantly, for its potential to mitigate wildfire risk. With the fire season already underway — marked by several small, fortunately contained blazes in recent days — even brief rain can offer residents some respite and help reduce immediate danger.
How These Showers Help
In his detailed forecast, Kolydas explained that while these rains won’t eliminate the seasonal wildfire threat, they do provide short-term benefits: increased soil moisture, dampening of low-lying vegetation, and slower drying of fine fuels — all of which can delay ignition and slow fire spread for several days.
According to Athens’ ensemble weather model, significant rainfall remains unlikely until Thursday. A notable shift emerges on Friday, 12 June, when forecast models begin showing greater divergence — with many scenarios now pointing to showers or isolated thunderstorms across Attica. Instability is expected to persist into Saturday, bringing repeated — though not continuous — rain events.
Sunday, 14 June, and Monday, 15 June, still feature some rain scenarios in forecasts, but uncertainty rises significantly. Any precipitation during those days is expected to be highly localized — typical of instability-driven showers, where intensity can vary sharply over just a few kilometres.
