Weather Forecast: African Dust Invasion and 35°C Heatwave This Week

The new week is set to start with a familiar ‘cocktail’ of heat, making the atmosphere stifling across Greece. According to meteorological predictions, starting Monday, May 5, 2025, summer will make its presence felt with temperatures reaching up to 35°C. The fifth day of May brings an ‘invasion’ of African dust, with Tuesday and Wednesday expected to be the hottest days of the week, especially in eastern and southern continental areas as well as Crete. Southerly winds will prevail, aiding the transfer of dust from Africa. However, localized showers are also expected, mainly in northern continental regions during the warmer hours of the day. Beaches in Attica were already bustling on Sunday, reminiscent of June, with families enjoying their first tentative dip in the sea. Despite high beach prices, many Athenians flocked to organized beaches where umbrellas and sunbeds ranged from €10 to €75 daily, increasing significantly on weekends. The highest temperatures were recorded inland, particularly in Karditsa, which hit 32°C. On Monday, African dust is expected to affect western and southern parts of the country, with scattered clouds and occasional local showers forecast for central and northern areas. Winds will be southwesterly up to 6 Beaufort in the south, while temperatures will range from 20-23°C in the northwest to 24-26°C elsewhere, peaking at 29°C locally in the east. Similar conditions are predicted for the rest of the week, with sporadic thunderstorms in some areas.
