Weather Forecast: A Choking Cocktail of African Dust and Heatwaves – Rain and Thunderstorms Expected by Sunday

in

Spring has a surprise in store for us, as the weather is set to dramatically change within hours. The heat will give way to rain and cooler temperatures. Today, Saturday (May 24, 2025), the main feature of the weather will be the peak of African dust combined with high temperatures for this time of year. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly, especially in central and southern regions, reaching up to 30-32°C inland and even 33°C in some areas. The Dodecanese Islands may see temperatures of 31-33°C, while the rest of the islands could reach 28-30°C Celsius, with northern Crete possibly hitting 34-35°C. Local showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecasted from midday onwards in Macedonia, the mountainous areas of Epirus, Thessaly, and Thrace. These phenomena will subside overnight in Thessaly and Thrace. Meteorological conditions favor the transport of African dust. However, the weather scene will resemble autumn starting Sunday, with heavy rains expected, followed by significant temperature drops on Monday. Check out the weather progression via the Windy app. The forecast for the upcoming days shows changes in the west, central, and northern parts of the country, gradually spreading across all regions with rain and scattered thunderstorms. Strong phenomena are possible in certain areas from the afternoon in Sterea, Thessaly, Sporades, and Macedonia, and from evening hours in Thrace. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are also predicted in the remaining areas. Winds in the west and north will blow northerly northwest at 4-6 Beaufort, locally 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea. In other regions, winds will come from southerly directions at 4-5 Beaufort, locally 6-7 Beaufort in the Aegean. Temperatures will drop mainly in the west, central, and northern regions, ranging from 25-27°C in the west, 28-30°C in central and northern areas, 27-28°C (locally 29-30°C) in the eastern islands, and 30-33°C (locally 34°C) in Crete.
