A severe weather system brought widespread disruption across Greece, with intense thunderstorms — known locally as bourinies — causing flooding, fallen trees, and infrastructure damage. The Hellenic Fire Service received a total of 940 emergency calls between yesterday afternoon and this morning across the regions of Attica, Central Greece, and Thessaly.
Emergency Response by Region
In Attica, the Fire Service’s Operations Center recorded 850 calls. Responders carried out 251 tree removals, 59 object clearances, and 54 water pumping operations.
In Central Greece, 60 calls were received, resulting in 36 tree removals and 3 water pumping interventions.
In Thessaly, 30 calls were logged, leading to 17 tree removals, 2 object clearances, and 6 water pumping operations.
Hail Damage in Thessaly
A severe hailstorm struck the area around Potamia and Elasona, as well as Platanoulia and Dendra near Tyrnavos, on Friday, 24 July 2026. Lasting roughly 30 minutes, the event affected several settlements including Kefalovryso, Palaiokastro, Evangelismos, Magoula, Amouri, and Doméniko.
Preliminary assessments indicate damage to both tree crops and arable farming, as well as to plant stock. Local farmers report losses to fruit and cultivated land; the full extent of the damage will be confirmed following official inspections.
Traffic was also disrupted due to fallen trees on the old national road between Elasona and Larissa, as well as on sections of the local road network. For safety reasons, access to several rural crossings was temporarily suspended. Crews from relevant authorities worked to clear debris and restore traffic flow.
In Larissa city, isolated power outages occurred, while strong wind gusts triggered additional tree falls across various parts of Thessaly.
