The heatwave has begun and is intensifying today, Sunday (06.07.2025), as a thermal dome moves over Europe, pushing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and remaining in place until Wednesday. The temperature rise will be gradual, with the heatwave starting in western Macedonia before spreading across the country.
High temperatures are expected to last for four days, with Monday and Tuesday being the hottest, reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius in several areas. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), very high temperatures are forecast from Sunday (06-07-25) through Wednesday (09-07-25).
Today’s highs will reach:
– 38 to 39°C, possibly hitting 40°C locally in Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and western Central Greece.
– 37 to 39°C in eastern Central Greece and the Peloponnese.
– 35 to 36°C on the Ionian Islands.
Localized cloudiness is expected over central and northern inland regions during midday and afternoon hours, with brief showers occurring in the mountainous areas of Epirus and Macedonia.
Winds will be light and variable in western regions, occasionally shifting to westerly-northwesterly at 3–4 Bft during midday and afternoon. In eastern areas, northerly winds will blow between 3–5 Bft, reaching up to 6 Bft locally in the central and northern Aegean.
Kostas Lagouvardos, meteorologist and director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, stated that this is a significant warm air intrusion affecting the Eastern Mediterranean. He emphasized that while temperatures will surpass 40°C in some areas, they won’t be extreme, calling it a typical July heatwave — relatively short and not unusually intense.
In Attica, maximum temperatures will reach 39–40°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, with minimums hovering around 29–30°C, causing discomfort throughout the day and night. High nighttime temperatures can pose health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
Looking ahead, the weather forecast from Meteo shows mostly sunny conditions with high temperatures across most of the country. Localized thunderstorms are expected during the hotter parts of the day in the northwest mountainous areas, with wind speeds up to 5 Bft in the Aegean.
On Sunday, temperatures ranged from 16°C in Western Macedonia to 38–40°C in western Greece. Winds were moderate, blowing from northerly directions in the Aegean and westerly in the Ionian Sea.
Monday will see continued heat, with local showers in the mountainous areas of Macedonia and Thessaly. Temperatures will peak at 41°C in some inland regions. Tuesday may bring even higher readings, potentially reaching 42°C in certain areas.
Wednesday will mark a slight drop in temperatures in western regions, though heat will persist elsewhere. By Thursday, a cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms to northern Greece, particularly in Macedonia and Thrace, offering some relief as temperatures begin to fall — especially in central and northern areas.
