Weather Alert: Dangerous Storms and Winds up to 10 Beaufort Hit Greece Sunday

Meteorologists issue a severe weather warning for Greece from Saturday night, January 31, 2026, through Monday evening. Extreme thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow at low altitudes in northern Greece and Thrace, and gusty winds up to 10 Beaufort are expected nationwide. With soil already saturated from recent extreme rainfall, flash flooding and landslides pose serious risks, especially in Thessaly, the Peloponnese, the Aegean, and Attica. Winds will be particularly fierce in the North Aegean, peaking at 9–10 Beaufort. Snow is expected at low elevations in northern regions and plains of Thrace. The system is expected to weaken by Monday. Experts note that Greece has received an entire year’s worth of rainfall in just three months—exceeding soil absorption capacity. Current conditions on January 30, 2026, include rain and isolated thunderstorms in the Eastern Aegean and Dodecanese, increasing intensity overnight in southern areas; scattered rain in western and northern mainland Greece, intensifying with thunderstorms in southwestern regions, Crete, and the Cyclades by evening; brief snowfall in northern mountains; and westerly winds ranging from 4–8 Beaufort, easing from afternoon.
