Weather Alert: Alfios River Water Levels at Critical Level Amid Approaching Storm

Residents in Elis warn that weekend rains will worsen the situation as water levels in the Alfios River have surged dramatically within hours. According to ilialive, flooding has been recorded behind levees in Kalivakia and downstream of the dam. Problems began as early as Thursday (29/1/2026) near Papadou, where the river overflowed into farmland. Overnight, heavy inflow from Arcadia—where the river originates—caused a sharp rise in water levels. Farmers in Makrisia–Kalivakia reported the river was relatively low in the morning, but within hours flooded fields behind the levees. Orange groves and vineyards—located beyond the road’s edge—were submerged. Conditions at the dam are difficult due to sediment buildup obstructing flow; spillways serve as the only outlet. Most alarming is the flooding downstream of the dam. A combination of high water volume and adverse coastal weather slowing outflow to the sea caused rising levels from Alfeiussa toward the estuary. The Civil Protection Units of Elis Regional Unit and Pyrgos Municipality are on high alert and actively intervening. If weekend weather forecasts materialize, conditions may deteriorate significantly.
