Weather Alert: After 4-Day Heatwave with 40°C Temperatures, Stormy Winds Bring Wildfire Risk

A dangerous four-day heatwave is set to begin on Sunday (05/07/2025), with temperatures soaring past the 40°C mark across Greece. Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis warned about the extreme conditions in a Facebook post, highlighting the health and environmental risks associated with such high temperatures.

However, the danger doesn’t end when the heatwave does. According to the forecast, stormy winds are expected to follow the intense heat, significantly increasing the risk of wildfires, especially in regions already affected by the scorching temperatures.

Marousakis explained: ‘The temperature rise has already begun, with some areas reaching near 40°C as early as today (Saturday). The situation will become even more challenging from Sunday through Wednesday, with local temperatures likely to exceed the 40°C threshold. As this intense heat wave comes to an end, the collision between the hot air mass and the cooler one following it (Wednesday–Thursday) will intensify northerly winds to storm levels, dramatically increasing fire danger—locally, the risk could be extreme.’

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has updated its extraordinary weather bulletin, warning that extremely high temperatures are expected nationwide from Sunday (06-07-25) through Wednesday (09-07-25). The temperature rise began in western Greece and Macedonia on Saturday and will spread to the rest of the country on Sunday.

The highest temperatures—reaching up to 41°C—are expected from Monday onward in inland areas of continental Greece, particularly in the west, central, and northern parts. Key details include:

– Coastal areas will experience maximum temperatures 2–4°C lower than inland regions.
– Relative humidity will remain low, dropping to around 20–30% during midday hours in inland areas.
– Minimum temperatures in urban centers will stay high, ranging between 26–28°C on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Specific forecasts:
– **Sunday (06-07-25):** High temperatures across mainland Greece and the Ionian Islands, with peaks reaching 38–40°C in western regions and 35–36°C along the Ionian coast.
– **Monday (07-07-25):** Widespread extreme heat, with inland areas seeing temperatures up to 41°C. Even islands like the Ionian, Eastern Aegean, and Dodecanese will reach 36–38°C.
– **Tuesday and Wednesday (08–09-07-25):** A slight drop in temperatures in western and Ionian regions, but a possible increase (by 1–2°C) in eastern mainland and the Aegean, with some locations possibly reaching 41–42°C.

According to meteo.gr’s live weather forecast, mostly sunny skies and high temperatures are expected across most of the country. However, isolated showers may occur during the hottest hours in mountainous areas of the northwest. Wind gusts of up to 5 Beaufort are expected in the Aegean Sea.

In Athens, clear skies and intense heat are predicted, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 38°C and northeasterly winds at 2–4 Beaufort. In Thessaloniki, expect sunny skies with occasional clouds during the day, southerly winds at 2–3 Beaufort, and temperatures between 25 and 35°C.
