War in Ukraine: Child dead and 29 injured in Kharkiv from Russian-controlled bomb in an apartment building

One child was killed and 29 other people were injured in a Russian bombing in Ukraine, Thursday morning (31.10.2024). The Russian attack with a directed bomb hit an apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, military district chief of the region of the same name, Oleh Sinehubov announced via Telegram. Earlier, local authorities spoke of 23 injured, clarifying that there were still victims “under the debris”. The directed bomb launched by aircraft, a weapon with great power used daily in Russia’s war with Ukraine, the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, said in his address. District chief Sinehubov said investigations in the building were “continued”. He spoke of “severe major damage” due to the “enemy-directed bomb”, warning that he is threatening a “collapse” of the apartment building that “puts at risk the work of rescue workers”. He referred to three people, among them a woman and child, who had been trapped “under the debris” and assured that rescue crews “were trying to get them out”. Other tenants were trapped on the building’s highest floors, the mayor of Harkov, Ihor Terehov, announced earlier, clarifying that the bomb destroyed several floors. Video that “came up” to social media shows a huge hole in the facade of the apartment building. Ukrainian president Volontimir Zelenski demanded last night his western allies react to this attack. “Every decision that delays means that dozens, if not hundreds of Russian bombs (hit) Ukraine. Their decisions depend on our fellow citizens’ lives,” he argued. Kiev requires its allies in the West to enable it to hit targets deeply in Russia with the weapons they have disposed of. In May, the Russian military launched an attack on areas in the Harkov region, with a declared goal of creating a neutral zone to reduce Ukrainian attacks on military and industrial facilities on Russian territory. The operation had no tangible effect.
