The industrial average declined on Friday (May 9, 2025), as investors await the much-anticipated trade talks between U.S. and Chinese officials over the weekend. Specifically, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 119.07 points, or 0.29%, closing at 41,249.38. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.07%, closing at 5,659.91, while the Nasdaq Composite ended the session with minimal change, closing at 17,928.92. The talks with Chinese officials follow the preliminary trade agreement reached between the U.S. and the UK, with investors hoping this will lead to more agreements soon. “The progress this week was encouraging, but we remain in the fluctuations of the news cycle, which trigger market reactions. We are likely in a sideways period of volatility until we start seeing tangible results,” said Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide. This week, the S&P 500 declined approximately 0.5% and the Nasdaq by about 0.3%, while the Dow saw a drop of nearly 0.2%.
