Alarm spread across Marousi, a northern suburb of Athens, after a shared wall partially collapsed at an under-construction apartment building, sending debris crashing into the courtyard of a neighboring single-family home.
Minor Injury, Emergency Response
The incident occurred on Sunday, 4 July 2026, shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Georgiou Papandreou Street. A section of the dividing wall gave way, causing bricks and masonry to fall onto the roof and yard of the adjacent house — triggering panic among local residents.
A man who was sitting in his backyard at the time sustained minor leg injuries from the falling materials, according to the Hellenic Police. An ambulance rushed him to the General State Hospital of Athens ‘G. Gennimatas’ for initial medical care.
Security Measures and Traffic Disruption
Police units quickly cordoned off the area and launched safety assessments to protect nearby residents. Vehicle traffic on Georgiou Papandreou Street — between Sappho Street and the incident site — was temporarily suspended until authorities completed inspections and cleared hazardous debris.
‘The Whole House Shook’
A neighbor described the moment: ‘We heard it — the whole house shook. A large brick section fell directly on him while he was sitting in his yard, injuring his leg.’ She added that residents immediately rushed outside to assist.
She also noted that the nearby construction site has reportedly been inactive and abandoned for years — raising questions about structural maintenance and oversight.
